Poker is a card game made up of several earlier variations. The name “Poker” is attributed to Jonathan H. Green, who saw the game in action on a Mississippi riverboat. Green described a game where two to four players shuffle 20 cards, discarding any card with an ace, and play to win. This game is the oldest known card game and has evolved over the centuries. Its origins are unknown but the game’s rules and betting options are still controversial.

Basic rules

Dealing cards

In most variants of poker, dealing cards involves multiple players. Typically, the dealer deals the first card to the player to his or her left. From there, the cards are distributed clockwise, with the next player to the dealer’s left receiving the corresponding number of cards. Depending on the stakes, the number of hands dealt will vary. A single player may start with two to five cards. A round of betting will follow the flop.

Dealer button

There are several different ways to designate the Dealer button. Some casinos have buttons that have two or three faces, and others have only one. In flop-style poker games, players to the left of the button place blinds. The dealer is the player who deals the hand until all players have placed their money into the pot.
